Creating a balanced, interesting still life is one of the most challenging things I can think of in terms of composition.
These are some of my early attempts.

Another very early still life painting. Getting the grapes right was lots of fun. They have a three dimensional quality.

This was another exercise in reproducing textures. Each rock has it's own distinctive shape and characteristics.
I enjoyed scavenging around the neighbourhood for just the right rocks, too.
"Jug and Bottle" was one of my very early still lifes done at a watercolour class and later completed at home.
It's one of my favourites.
This study focuses on the contrast in textures ...
the glow on the egglant and tomato, the peeling skin of the red onion, the shine on the jar, the muted clustered flowerettes of the broccoli, the weave of the reed basket, the pattern on the tablecloth, the jumbled stems and leaves.
