My Dad was a self-taught artist. When I was a child, I remember watching him paint landscapes ... and I distinctly remember the smell of the oil paints he was using.
Later, when I went to Art College, I enjoyed sketching trees and other natural things, but I never developed the urge to work on a full landscape. In fact, I always found them rather intimidating.
But when I discovered watercolour painting decades later, and found myself in a class where we were expected to produce landscapes as well as a variety of other subjects, I was forced to face my demons.
I'm glad I did. Despite my mental block against landscape art, I found it no more difficult or challenging than any other aspect of this work.
It's all challenging.

"Bruce Trail Waterfall" was painted in a watercolour class that my Dad and I attended at Springbank Visual Arts Center.
I learned how to apply masque for the first time.
I completed the watercolour at home in the weeks after the class finished and am rather pleased with the way it turned out.

"Forest over the Gorge" was produced in watercolour class, and was my first watercolour landscape done under the direction of a teacher.
It was a nerve racking experience, but I followed my instincts and learned a whole lot!

"Lake at Dawn" was a very early watercolour attempt, done from a photo I found in a book.
